Course Summary: The continuing education program is designed to meet educational requirements regarding parenteral moderate and deep sedation/ general anesthesia. This program meets the requirements set forth by various state boards requiring 8 hours or less of parenteral moderate sedation renewal training or 12 hours of deep sedation/ general anesthesia. The purpose of the program is to provide updates regarding legal-state board requirements, medical principles of sedation and emergency management. State board requirements will be addressed including current and updated state regulations. Specific rules will be addressed to each participant’s particular state. Requirements addressed will include office protocols, anesthesia equipment and emergency equipment and medications. Necessary documentation such as pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia instructions, pre-sedation checklists, consent requirements and anesthesia procedure and recovery documentation will be discussed. Current consent issues and recommendations will be discussed as published by the Texas Medical Disclosure Panel. Medical principles of sedation will include patient assessment of adult and pediatric patients, obtaining necessary consultations, and risk assessment. How the necessary pre-assessment information requirements ascertained is important in determining patient selection. Pharmacology and administration/ dosing of various sedative and non-sedative medications and their use will be discussed with patient examples. Patient management from the beginning of sedation through dismissal will be presented. Emergency preparation and management is extremely important in the safe management of a sedated patient. Preparation including required emergency practice sessions, medications and adjunctive equipment will be discussed. Airway management is extremely important so management during the procedure will be shown. An airway station to practice emergency airway management is part of the program with positive pressure apparatus and airway available. Additionally, anesthesia-related and medical emergencies will be addressed and practiced utilizing high-fidelity pediatric and adult manikins. Additionally, anesthesia-related and medical emergency management scenarios will be addressed and managed in groups utilizing life-like high fidelity pediatric and adult manikins. The focus is to enhance the safety and success of non-anesthesia and anesthesia treatment procedures at all levels. Time will be available for an open discussion of various cases and scenarios with the faculty and participants. This continuing education program satisfies Rule 110 by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, and other state dental boards, requiring that all practitioners, in order to keep their Parenteral Sedation permit current, document successful completion of a continuing education course every two years. NOTE: You must be current in ACLS or PALS and you must complete an online component prior to the live program. The ACLS or PALS course prerequisite consists of completing the AHA online component prior to the course. Applicants will be given an access code, once they sign up for the program. Registrations received less than one week prior to the program will not be accepted without the course director approval.

Course Fulfillment: This course is designed to satisfy parenteral sedation permit renewal requirements for states requiring up to 8 hours of anesthesia specific continuing education for enteral sedation. It will provide 8 hours as a partial fulfillment for states requiring more than 8 hours. Renewal program in class. This may be designated as Level 2, level 3, moderate sedation depending upon the state. State Board rules discussed and the program will be specific for each individual state. Educational Course Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
· Provide educational review for the practitioner based upon individual state board requirements
· Review safe and effective sedation management of adult and pediatric patients
· Address Emergency Management of the sedated patient including hands-on airway management (manikin)
· Recognize and initiate early management of conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
· Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use.
· Manage cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation, termination of resuscitation, or transfer of care.
· Identify and treat ischemic chest pain and expedite the care of patients with acute coronary syndromes
· Recognize other life-threatening clinical situations, such as stroke, and provide effective initial care and transfer to reduce disability and death.
· Demonstrate effective communication as a member of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
· Explain why the foundation of successful resuscitations includes both mastery of basic skills and effective team dynamics
· Describe the important elements of effective resuscitation team dynamics
· Describe the clinical situations in which the following airway adjuncts may be used for airway management: oropharyngeal airway, nasopharyngeal airway, bag-mask ventilation, advanced airway
· Recognize a patient who may be in Ventricular Fibrillation
· Perform defibrillation with minimal interruption of chest compressions
· Coordinate team functions while ensuring continuous high-quality CPR, defibrillation, and rhythm assessment
· Assign team functions and monitor CPR
· Discuss the circumstances when resuscitation should not be initiated
· Recall that survival from asystole is poor and that asystole may represent an agonal end-stage rhythm
· Recall the correct dosage and timing of administration for epinephrine, vasopressin, and atropine in cardiac arrest
· Assign team member roles and monitor performance
· Discuss the differential diagnosis of life-threatening chest discomfort
· Recognize symptomatic bradycardia and recall its signs, symptoms, causes, and treatment
· Determine whether signs and symptoms are caused by bradycardia or by another condition
· Demonstrate safe and effective cardioversion
· How to perform an initial patient assessment that can identify symptoms due to a stable tachycardia
· How to identify sinus tachycardia and understand that treatment involves identification of an underlying cause
